Enrolling in a Career College or School - What Should I Consider?

Why enroll in a career college? |
|
Career colleges focus on teaching the skills needed for employment. A study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows that six of the ten fastest growing occupational categories between 2004 and 2014 require less than a four-year degree. While the government forecasts that job opportunities requiring a four-year degree will increase 17 percent during this time period, it also estimates that job opportunities requiring a two-year degree will increase 19 percent. |
A private career college may be just what you need to help you gain the skills in order to find a job or advance in your career. |

If you decide you want to be one of the approximately 100,000 people in Ohio who attend private career colleges, you should first select what area you want to study. Pick a career you think you would enjoy. Pay attention to the pay scales of various jobs and consider your chances for advancement once you enter that type of work. You may want to seek out the advice of friends or a guidance counselor to help you assess your aptitudes. |

Selecting a career college
When it comes time to pick a college, take your time and be thorough. Select the programs that best fits your needs. Visit the college’s web site. Talk to people who may have attended the career college. Talk to employers in area. Look at the descriptions of the classes you will be taking. |
Visit the college or school. Look around to see what's going on. Does the school have good, up-to-date equipment? Is the training practical or theoretical? Ask the admissions office how many graduates are placed into jobs. Speak to a recent graduate to get a first-hand view. |
Read any enrollment agreement and be sure you understand it before you sign. Get someone else to review it if you do not understand it. Also, be sure you understand the courses offered, the time frame involved and the conditions for payment. |
